The family of a man who was shot and killed by Pennsylvania police says he was off his medication and not thinking clearly.

Police said Ricardo Munoz ran at police while holding a knife before he was shot Sunday.

Munoz's mother and sisters said they have called for help before and never thought reaching out would lead to his death.

Miguelina Pena said her son battled paranoid schizophrenia for a decade.

"They should have come here to help, not to kill, and they shot him straight through the heart," Pena said via a translator.

Rulennis Munoz called crisis intervention about her brother.

"When a person has mental issues, they shouldn't be treated like a criminal. They shouldn't be killed for being sick," she said.

Munoz said her family needed help and didn't get it. Now, the family wants solutions and not protests.

"Violence will just make this issue worse. We need to come together as a people to figure out a way how to stop this from happening," Munoz said.

Family members said they are disappointed that police released body camera footage showing Munoz wielding the knife. They said it makes it look like a criminal without the context of his mental health history.
