Way to go! High school senior donates more than a gallon of blood before graduation

Joseph Simmons gave his 10th blood donation this week.

Joseph Simmons, a senior at St. Augustine High School in Louisiana, gave his 10th blood donation this week. Simmons received his red honor cord and gallon donor pin from fellow St. Augustine graduate, Alfred McCrea, who graduated in 1979.

Simmons said giving blood is one way he likes making a difference.

"If you donate, you can help save three lives," Simmons said. "Think if it was your parent or your loved one that was in need and needed the saving. You'd do it then."

According to The Blood Center, it takes most donors years to become gallon donors.

Several other high school seniors from Simmons' area also reached the same milestone.
