On May 25, 2020, George Floyd died while in custody of the Minneapolis Police Department. Former officer Derek Chauvin, who held his knee on Floyd's neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, has been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter.

Floyd’s death has inspired protests, both here and abroad, and shed light on the treatment of black people, sometimes at the hand of police, in the United States.
