Vietnam veteran Gerry Burchfield couldn't be more thankful to the organization that united him with his service dog. So he started a collection jar for Saving Grace K-9s, which provides free service dogs to veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder as part of its mission to prevent veteran suicide.
But in December 2018, that collection jar was stolen. Randolph County Sheriff's Office Detective J.C. Akines looked into the case and decided to help Burchfield by starting a collection of his own. For weeks, he gathered donations from the community and placed them inside an envelope.
