The University of Houston said it's pausing voluntary workouts after six student-athletes tested positive for COVID-19 and cases increased in the greater Houston area in the last week.

"The impacted students have been placed in isolation and contact tracing procedures have been initiated following protocol," the university said Friday in a statement.

The workouts began June 1 with football and men's and women's basketball.

Several conferences announced they'd begin voluntary workouts for several sports, but at least 19 states have increasing case rates, according to CNN.
