University, elementary students forge special bond through reading, tying ties

A "Men Who Read" program is helping boys, both grown and small.

Furman University athletes helped show young kids the importance of reading and more.

They got together through a "Men Who Read" program to promote literacy.

The young boys at Monaview Elementary also got help with tying ties.

"It’s funny because one of the Furman athletes said to me, ‘You could just see it creates a sense of pride in them as soon as they put their jacket on and tie their tie,’" said Beth Pontari, a Furman administrator.

Athletes from the university's soccer and tennis teams helped.
