The cost of home testing for COVID-19 is an eligible, reimbursable medical expense, IRS says

Here's what the IRS says about why purchases of at-home COVID-19 tests and personal protective equipment are reimbursable.

The cost of at-home COVID-19 tests is an eligible medical expense that can be paid for or reimbursed by health flexible spending arrangements, health savings accounts, health reimbursement arrangements or Archer medical savings accounts.

According to the IRS, these at-home test kits are covered "because the cost to diagnose COVID-19 is an eligible medical expense for tax purposes."

The IRS also says the costs of personal protective equipment — masks, hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes — for the primary purpose of preventing the spread of COVID-19 are also eligible medical expenses that can be covered or reimbursed.
