'Teaching is my purpose': Educator praised for making a difference after just a year at his school

"I've seen students not just grow but flourish," the principal said.

With balloons in hand, a group is on its way to Kyair Butts’ sixth grade language arts class for a big surprise

Mr. K is the 2019 recipient of Baltimore City’s Teacher of the Year award.

“Teaching is my purpose and when you step into that, you're really powerful. So, when students see someone doing that. That looks like them, who has maybe a background similar to theirs, they feel they can do this as well.” Mr. K said.

He’s only been teaching at Waverly Middle School for a year and the principal says he's already made a big difference.
