A first of its kind music study is seeking to determine if there is a safe way for performing arts to return to school during the pandemic.

Some of the researchers say schools need to be willing to look a little different.

"Our goal is if it's safe enough for you to be in a math class, it's safe enough for you to be in a music class," said James Weaver, director of performing arts and sports of the National Federation of State High School Associations, who co-chaired the school music study.

The study suggests not only masking students in a band room setting, but also masking the instruments to help stop the spread of aerosol droplets, in addition to other considerations.
