Matt Francis has become known as "the smiley face guy."

The 62-year-old has been greeting people in his New York community for months with a wave, some encouraging words and a bright yellow sign with a smile drawn on it.

"The whole thing is, we're in a dark time. Why not go out and wave and greet a neighbor and wish them a nice day?" Francis told Spectrum News in Syracuse.

Francis said he tries to cheer people up as they go to work or travel home.

"I've had so many thank yous. I shared so many tears with people going through horrible times," he told the news station.

Francis said greeting others has become his full-time job and hopes others pass along the kindness.

"See what you can do to put a smile on somebody's face," he said. "I'm not always smiling, but it don't take long when I come out. If I can get one smile, it's a success, but the thing is, I get blessed with many. Sometimes I don't want to go home."
