Single mother of six, cancer survivor dies of COVID-19

Her eldest son will be stepping up to take care of his family after he finishes college.

A mother of six who previously survived cancer died due to an infection from the novel coronavirus.

Sundee Rutter lost her husband years ago and worked on her own to provide for her children. She was 42.

"We're pretty devastated," says Rutter's friend of 30 years, Jessica Harris. "She beat cancer and lost the battle to coronavirus? It's just crazy."

Rutter's family says two weeks ago, the mom went to the hospital but was sent back home.

A few days later they say Rutter had a fever and trouble breathing. Her son took her to Providence Hospital, and she was admitted.

After a week of treatment, she died Monday.

Her oldest son, Tyree, 24, is now stepping up to take care of the family after he graduates from college.

"She never, for one moment, put herself first," Harris said. "So she would go to work so she could take care of her kids, no matter what it took."

The family has a GoFundMe set up to help the children.
