Residents revitalized their town's shuttered soda fountain -- volunteers scoop to keep it open

Volunteers are keeping their town's sweet past alive.

Have you ever had a Coke or a malt from a real classic soda fountain?

Soda fountains have disappeared from many small towns, but in Allerton, Iowa's town of 500 people, residents bought an abandoned storefront, learned to make old-fashioned malts and opened its own scoop of history called the Old Time Soda Fountain.

Coke there is made with real syrup, and glasses are frosted, which are perfect for root beer floats.

Most essential of all: Everyone who works there is a volunteer.

The shop is open each Saturday evening between spring and Halloween.
