Johnny Fluitt is bringing his love of gardening to a group of kids as part of the Food Brings Hope program in Florida.
Food Brings Hope provides underprivileged kids with opportunities and resources to discover their full potential.
Fluitt isn’t just a volunteer, but also someone the program helped.
He spent most of his youth homeless before moving into a home run by Food Brings Hope. Besides giving back, Fluitt goes to school full-time, has a part-time job and an internship at Daytona State College.
"When I get a text from him, it just makes me sit up a little taller and feel a bit better and proud and happy because it’s from him," Judi Winch, the executive director of Food Brings Hope, said.
Winch said Fluitt’s biggest impact on the community is leading by example.
"Others can learn from him and look up to him as the role model," Winch said. "He is a community champion in my heart and in many others."
