Police officers in Newark, New Jersey did not fire a single shot in all of 2020. Amid a series of unending officer-involved shootings, that may sound impossible. But following an investigation by the Department of Justice in 2014, the city’s police force took steps to fight widespread police brutality and racism among their ranks. Many of those efforts were modeled after Camden, New Jersey. That’s when the Mayor and the city council disbanded their police department and rebuilt a countywide force.
