Some businesses that rely on summer tourism are finding new ways to lure more customers, including paying for coronavirus testing.

The Elmwood Resort Hotel in Wells, Maine is running a promotion where it will pay for rapid tests for two adults if they stay for several days.

The tests are offered at a nearby hospital and cost $25 apiece, but hotel owner Scott Defelice says it is worth the investment.

"We have had a few people that have seen the ad that we are running and said, 'Hey, that is a great idea,'" Defelice said. "They've booked their stay and what they've done is just gone online immediately and book their appointment to get their test done and that way they know that they've got it on the books."

Defelice said it especially helps draw people from Massachusetts, whose residents are still required to either quarantine for 14 days or provide a negative COVID-19 test if they want to come to Maine. Defelice says Massachusetts guests usually make up roughly 70% of his business.

Defelice said he's hopeful the testing promotion will help boost business. The money he makes during the summer is all spent by the time winter ends, he said.
