A 9-year-old girl who was struck by a dump truck last week while exiting her school bus is facing a long recovery.

The incident happened around 4 p.m. Oct. 6 on Louisiana Highway 23 in Plaquemines Parish. Louisiana state police said the 9-year-old was struck after a dump truck approaching the stopped bus with its stop sign extended and flashing lights activated swerved to miss the bus and struck the girl.

The girl, identified as Isabella Castanza by WWL-TV, has been sedated since being hospitalized.

Michelle Winterstein told the TV station that her daughter will need part of her left foot and her lower right leg amputated due to the damage done in the incident.

"She’s still here," Winterstein told WWL-TV. "That alone is the biggest fight."

Gregory Valentine, 61, of Donaldsonville, was charged with negligent injuring, reckless operation of a vehicle, and driving with a suspended license, according to state police.

A GoFundMe page has raised more than $20,000 as of Thursday afternoon towards her recovery expenses.
