Officials say a Florida sheriff’s deputy with one shift left before retirement was intentionally hit and killed by a man who was fleeing law enforcement.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said late Monday Corporal Brian LaVigne was set to retire on Tuesday.
Now, multiple charges are pending against 28-year-old Travis Zachary Gabriel Garrett.
Deputies were called to Garrett’s apartment regarding erratic behavior on Monday. Deputies spoke to him and cleared the call.
A short time later neighbors called again.
This time, the sheriff says Garrett attacked responding deputies.
They tried using a stun gun, but he got into a car and fled. Chronister says Garrett hit LaVigne's vehicle intentionally.
