Varsity baseball and softball have returned. Before an Iowa high school's baseball team took the field, however, they took something else: a knee.
The entire Des Moines Roosevelt High School team kneeled when the national anthem was played before Monday's season opener against Ankeny Centennial. They decided during a Saturday meeting they would do it. The coaches stood behind them and placed their hands on the players' shoulders.
"We talked about it and we came to the decision as players to take a knee," Alex Pendergast, the team’s third baseman, said. "No disrespect to the flag, just simply to bring attention to the issues at hand."
