Summer dance camp gives girls a chance to be light on their feet

Dance teacher Maria Mbouje designs and funds costumes for nearly 100 girls in the summer camp.

A summer camp in Baltimore provides a breath of fresh air for girls of all ages to express themselves through dance.

Maria Mbouje has been holding her Generation Hip-Hop Dancers and Models Camp for more than 15 years.

"It has dance, ballet, modern dance, hip-hop, yoga and click heels, fashion," Mbouje said.

The girls, ages 5 through 17, learn all things dance and fashion.

She's designing and funding costumes for nearly 100 girls this year alone.

Camp begins with words of affirmation because the girls see a lot of violence, Mbouje said. Two past attendees were senselessly killed.

“Some girls have been through a lot," she said. "They've done a lot of things and when they come here, it's just a heavy load off their shoulders because you're just treated just like one young lady."

Mbouje said it's her way of giving back to girls in communities that need it most.
