A class project recently turned into a passion project for college student Christine Gresham.

Gresham was assigned to study headstones to find out the lifespans of people through the centuries. She decided to come to Benbow Chapel AME Zion Church in East Bend, North Carolina.

When she saw many of the headstones covered in bamboo, she wanted to help, even though she has no personal connection to the church or cemetery.

"I feel proud," Gresham said. "I feel happy that I'm able to help somebody's family, somebody's loved one that's trying to rest in peace."
