A California farmer went to great lengths to propose to his girlfriend.

Sam Merwin wanted to do something special for his girlfriend, Brittany Farnsworth, so he spent a year secretly taking flying lessons.

When he got his license last week, he took her for a surprise flight. Once they were in the air, he had her look out the window for the message he had cut into a harvested field in

"We're flying around for a little bit and I look over in a field and it says, ‘Brittany will you marry me?’ And I look over and the ring box is just sitting in my lap,” Farnsworth said. "I like, started crying and I couldn’t talk. I was like, ‘I don’t know what to do.’ I wanted to look at this but also look at the ring. It was so cool.”

“It took me a longer than expected but once I got to a certain point, I was like too far in to change my plan at that point,” Merwin said.

And of course — Farnsworth said yes. The couple plans to get married next year, but say the ceremony may be a little more down to Earth.
