Sheppard, who is a member of the Mandan Hidatsa Arikara Nation, takes special care in honoring her heritage at Bow and Arrow Brewing.

"It is very clear to people when they enter the beer hall, that this has influence from a native woman's perspective,” she said.

Even the brewery name, Bow and Arrow, represents strength and protection in her tribe.

Sheppard was one of four brewery owners invited to a food conference at the Smithsonian in Washington because of the unique ingredients she uses, from locally roasted blue corn to Navajo tea.
