Boxing coach encourages his students to stay off the streets and in the ring

This compact boxing studio is encouraging at-risk youth to make good choices.

VIP Boxing in Des Moines has a humble gym space.

Coach Marwan Saadiq opened a boxing studio in his basement two years ago, with the hopes of encouraging young people to make good choices.

"I've seen firsthand what the streets could do to you and the ones you care about," Saadiq said. "If I can help two or three, then I feel like I'm doing something positive."

He now puts on gloves and a pendant that belonged to his late father, who set this match into motion.

"I made a promise. I said, 'I'm going to make something out of it.' The guy, he loved boxing. He's pretty much the one who introduced me to boxing," Saadiq said.
