Artist’s tribute to health care workers offers source of unity, hope to community

"I wanted their eyes to have light. So, I wanted to represent the light at the end of the tunnel when we come out of all this."

Nelson Cardenas usually uses his wood burning skills to create art of famous athletes and musicians. Now, he's using them to pay tribute to local heroes.

Cardenas works at a hospital in Kissimmee, Florida, where he sees how the coronavirus is affecting health care workers every day. When he was asked to create one art piece commemorating their service, he decided to go beyond that by honoring health care workers with an entire series of portraits.
